It has become clear that forgetfulness is a form of powerlessness that is attributable to the spirits of iniquity. Why this matters is that we are incapable of remembering what we should instead be learning from, so to not repeat the same sin.

Shepherd of Hermas
He who indulges in luxury, and is deceived for one day, and who does what he wishes, is clothed with much foolishness, and does not understand the act which he does until the morrow; for he forgets what he did the day before. For luxury and deceit have no memories, on account of the folly with which they are clothed; but when punishment and torture cleave to a man for one day, he is punished and tortured for a year; for punishment and torture have powerful memories. While tortured and punished, therefore, for a whole year, he remembers at last his luxury and deceit, and knows that on their account he suffers evil. Every man, therefore, who is luxurious and deceived is thus tormented, because, although having life, they have given themselves over to death.”
“What kinds of luxury, sir,” I asked, “are hurtful?” “Every act of a man which he performs with pleasure,” he replied, “is an act of luxury; for the sharp tempered man, when gratifying his tendency, indulges in luxury; and the adulterer, and the drunkard, and the back-biter, and the liar, and the covetous man, and the thief, and he who does things like these, gratifies his peculiar propensity, and in so doing indulges in luxury. All these acts of luxury are hurtful to the servants of God.
On account of these deceits, therefore, do they suffer, who are punished and tortured. And there are also acts of luxury which save men; for many who do good indulge in luxury, being carried away by their own pleasure: this luxury, however, is beneficial to the servants of God, and gains life for such a man; but the injurious acts of luxury before enumerated bring tortures and punishment upon them; and if they continue in them and do not repent, they bring death upon themselves.”

What the above passage is saying is, what we are pleased to do that comes at a cost to others, is forgotten, but the punishment that coincides is remembered but if not repented leads to death. Then also, when it is our pleasure to do good, this luxury is life gaining.
In terms of forgetfulness, what is important is that what is not good that gives us pleasure, as well as being deceitful, are easily forgotten. This teaching has been left out. Without this understanding we go about claiming wicked pleasures as unimportant, and deceit as cleverness. Yes, we are told to refrain from all evil, but if inequity is forgotten what is there to repent?
When punishment comes for that which is forgotten, it is meant to bring us into remembering what has been done that is wrong. And it takes a great deal more to to reach that revelation than it does to do the act in the first place.
This is likely why the Commandments set out through Moses were given. If they are followed, inequity doesn't occur, and therefore, punishments to not consume a life. As for those who walked this path of righteousness, they themselves still were claimed by death because they did not have the guidance of the Holy Spirit to show them in grace what sin they should repent. See?

Hebrews 2:1-3
1
We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
2
For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3
how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

Forgetfulness is how the enemy controls the amount of cost that souls create. The soul is bringing lifetimes of punishment with them into death. How is this overcome? Those who believe in the mediation of Christ, are of the body of that authority, and carry the mind of Christ, the Holy Spirit, in them. Because he defeated death, his sacrifice atones for the punishment set out for inequity in those who believe.
Yes, repentance and bringing forth fruit worthy of repentance is a necessity to gain the fullness of this salvation. The forgetfulness still remains though for all who walk in their iniquities whether they are believers or not. So the reason why we must ask forgiveness daily for our trespasses, is because we still commit to that which pleases us, which creates cost, but is quickly forgotten.

Genesis 45:51
51
Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: “For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father’s house.”
---
The dangers of this include that over time, we begin to notice our prayers go unanswered and that we seem to be not developing in holiness. This too is because as we build up a list of transgressions, the Holy Spirit, in its gentleness, will only show us what we can manage. So while we are repenting, and bearing fruit worthy of repentance, we are still creating cost that we know not. The danger comes from not a lack of faith but a lack of self control.
Forgetfulness then can be isolates and done away with through one sure way; a fear of God in the present moment. If, with every passing moment we keep our love for the Father as primary in all the choices we make, this self control will work through us, guiding us away from falling into inequity. This would not be possible without self control, as self control is beyond our human desires, as it is holy and spiritual power.

Book of Enoch 5:8
8
When wisdom is given to the chosen they will all live, and will not again do wrong, either through forgetfulness, or through pride. But those who possess wisdom will be humble.
---
Forgetfulness has always been a tool of the enemy to bind souls in punishment. And for those who either do not know the Law or are of the faith, their fate is sealed. For those who are under the Law still, remain in this forgetfulness, because they deny the grace of the blood of the Lamb, and in so doing, do not have the Holy Spirit as council. The salvation from forgetfulness resides with those the Lord calls, and among those who were called that remain in faith and the commandments of love. But still there will always be temptation that is common to man, to lead us into inequity and away from holiness.

1 Corinthians 10:12,13
12
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
13
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
---
So the wisdom for believers is to remain faithful because of your fear of God, and to listen to what council the mind of Christ, the Holy Spirit lays upon you.
Forgetfulness has no power, but it will lead a soul to death. Forgetfulness is in you, your house, town, city, and nation. Forgetfulness is the foundation of folly and wickedness, as there is no remorse or repent of things forgotten. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Without a fear of God, it is impossible to gain wisdom to so to not repeat you inequity.

Proverbs 26:11
11
As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.
